Capturing the beauty of Tierra del Fuego
The Filmagallanes.cl project, which aims to encourage producers to film in Magallanes, took us through some of the most impressive and remote landscapes in the Magallanes Region. From the very beginning, we knew that this experience would be unique, and the format of traveling in a motorhome would become our best ally to capture the magic of Tierra del Fuego with freedom, time and comfort.
Crossing the Strait of Magellan: The Gateway to Tierra del Fuego
We begin our journey by crossing the mythical Strait of Magellan by barge to Porvenir, a town full of history and charm on the island of Tierra del Fuego. This small corner, founded during the gold rush at the end of the 19th century, welcomed us with its characteristic tranquility and its colorful houses, perfectly aligned with the immensity of the Tierra del Fuego landscape. Porvenir is not only an entrance to the island, but a place that invites you to stop, contemplate and connect with the roots of the region.
Bahía Inútil and Estancia Josefina
From Porvenir, we take the route that borders Bahía Inútil, a vast landscape of plains and mountains that seem eternal. We pass by the historic Estancia Josefina, one of the first to be settled in Tierra del Fuego, founded at the end of the 19th century as a center for sheep farming. Near the estancia there is an old cemetery, a silent witness to the hardship of the lives of those who came to inhabit this inhospitable land. This place not only has history, but also a solemn air that reminded us of the deep relationship between people and the land.
Photography in Motion: The Freedom of Traveling in an RV
Along our route, we were in no hurry. We were looking for the right light, the perfect composition. This is where our motorhome made the difference: the freedom to stop at any time, enjoy the scenery without rushing, and turn each stop into an opportunity to capture the essence of Magallanes. Without the need to check into a hotel or follow a rigid itinerary, every decision was ours, dictated only by the landscape and our cameras.
Karukinka Park: A Viewpoint to Eternity
Our path took us south to Karukinka Park, a protected natural treasure that spans over 300,000 hectares of pristine landscapes. This park is home to guanacos, culpeo foxes, and unique vegetation that includes extensive forests of lenga and coigüe. We decided to explore the trail to Pietro Grande, a one-hour walk that took us through the Tierra del Fuego vegetation, with views that seemed straight out of a dream. Upon reaching the top, the landscape left us speechless: a 360º view that encompassed mountains, lakes, and the endless vastness of Tierra del Fuego.
Despreciado Lake: Beauty at Dawn
We continued towards Despreciado Lake, a name that belies the beauty of this place. Along the way, we found a viewpoint that seemed perfect for spending the night. From our motorhome, we watched the sunrise as the colors of the sky transformed the landscape into a masterpiece. Later, we walked a nearby trail, managed by Karukinka Park, which took us through forests and lagoons, offering exceptional views for our photographs.
Our journey continued further south, towards Caleta Maria, one of the most extreme points on the continent. The winding road took us through dense forests, with views that seemed designed to be photographed. Finally, upon arrival, each of us took some time to walk freely, in search of a personal encounter with nature. This remote and silent place invited us to reflect on our relationship with the world, remoteness and freedom.
The Freedom of Traveling with Our Rvs
Traveling in a motorhome allowed us to live this project with a closer connection to nature. Without schedules, without restrictions, we had the freedom to explore, to stop and capture every corner of Magallanes at our own pace. It was more than a trip: it was a total immersion experience, where every kilometer traveled and every image captured reminded us of the immensity and beauty of this unique land.
Magallanes spoke to us through its untamed nature, and we, camera in hand, responded with gratitude and wonder.
